What is Ambroxol?
Ambroxol is a clinically proven systemically active mucolytic agent. When administered orally onset of action occurs after about 30 minutes. The breakdown of acid mucopolysaccharide fibres makes the sputum thinner and less viscous and therefore more easily removed by coughing. Although sputum volume eventually decreases, its viscosity remains low for as long as treatment is maintained.
Ambroxol Indications:
All forms of tracheobronchitis, emphysema with bronchitis pneumoconiosis, chronic inflammatory pulmonary conditions, bronchiectasis, bronchitis with bronchospasm asthma. During acute exacerbations of bronchitis, it should be given with the appropriate antibiotic.
Ambroxol Uses:
- Emphysema with Pneumoconiosis Bronchitis
- By making the sputum thin and less viscous and quick to cough out, this medication is used to relieve the state of shortness of breath, constant cough, and inflammation of the lung airways.
- Tracheobronchitis, Tracheobronchitis
- This drug is used for the symptomatic treatment of tracheobronchitis, an infection that induces tracheal (windpipe) and pulmonary airway inflammation. Ambroxol in this case relieves the patient from an excessive cough and thick sputum.
- Acute Bronchitis Exacerbations
- In cases of acute exacerbations of bronchitis, this drug should be given with the required antibiotic as it aids in the secretion of mucus, helping to improve cough, trouble with expectoration, and other symptoms.
Ambroxol Side Effects:
- Major & minor side effects of ambroxol are
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Gastrointestinal side effects
- Skin rash
- itching
- Infections
- Allergies
- Upset stomach
- Dizziness
- Weakness
- Dry mouth
- Indigestion
- Numbness in throat
- Numbness in mouth
- Taste disturbances
Precautions:
- If you have any of the following conditions or symptoms, medical advice prior to use should be sought:
- Symptoms suggestive of pneumonia or other lung infections (e.g. trouble breathing while sleeping, thick yellow or green mucus, blood-stained mucus, high-grade fever above 38 °C, chest pain), low immune system symptoms due to other health conditions (e.g. HIV) or drugs (e.g. chemotherapy, medication of the immune system) or current lung conditions such as COLD (chronic obstruction)
- If you have serious gastric ulceration, liver or kidney issues, notify your healthcare professionals.
- If you have a confirmed history of an allergy to ambroxol or bromhexine, or any of the other ingredients mentioned in the medicine, this drug should be avoided. Some ambroxol tablets can contain lactose as an inactive ingredient, so people who have inherited galactose intolerance, lactase deficiency (lactose digestive enzyme) or galactose absorption problems are not advised to take them.
- It is not recommended to use Ambroxol during the first trimester of pregnancy. It is not recommended to take ambroxol when breastfeeding, as ambroxol is excreted in breast milk.
- Before taking this drug, please seek the advice of your doctor or pharmacist if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Mechanism of action:
Ambroxol is a mucolytic agent. Excessive Nitric oxide (NO) is associated with inflammatory and some other disturbances of airways function. NO enhances the activation of soluble guanylate cyclase and cGMP accumulation. Ambroxol has been shown to inhibit the NO-dependent activation of soluble guanylate cyclase. It is also possible that the inhibition of NO-dependent activation of soluble guanylate cyclase can suppress the excessive mucus secretion, therefore it lowers the phlegm viscosity and improves the mucociliary transport of bronchial secretions.
